Check the Person
- Take time to look around and access the emergency situation.
- Make sure it is safe and there is nothing around that can harm you.
- Look for things that would indicate what happened that caused the emergency.
- Locate all the ill or injured people.
- See if there is anyone else that can help you.
Check the Person
- See if the person is conscious
- Ask the person if they are okay. - If the person does not respond to your voice, tap their shoulder.
- Tell the person who you are (your name), that you are trained in first aid, and that you are here to help.
- Ask for consent to help them, if they say yes, proceed with care. If they say no, do not touch them, call 911/EMS and tell them the person has refused help, and try to stay nearby the injured person if possible.
- Assume you have consent to help them.
- Check their airway, breathing, and circulation. (See 'ABC' section of 'First Aid & CPR' for how to check them.

- Determine whether or not there is a need to call 911/EMS based on the severity of their injuries.
- Have someone call 911/EMS & get an AED if one is available.
- Adult - Call 911/EMS, get an AED, then return to the care of the person.
- Child - Do five cycles of CPR (if neccessary), call 911/EMS, get an AED, then return to the care of the child.
- Baby - Do five cycles of CPR (if neccessary), take the baby with you (if there is no suspection of a head or spine inury), call 911/EMS, get an AED, then return to the care of the baby.
Care
Treat all life-threatening conditions first, then treat the less severe injuries.
If the persons ABCs are present make sure to treat the person for shock.
